Dimensions

How an STL viewer reports model size

The displayed dimensions come from the geometry's bounding box along the file's X, Y, and Z axes. They describe the complete span of the current model, not a point-to-point measurement you selected. Rotating the camera changes only your view; it does not change these stored axis dimensions.

If a model appears unexpectedly tiny or large, check the export units in the software that created it. Do not assume that an unlabeled value is millimeters. Open the same file in your slicer and explicitly confirm scale before generating supports or G-code.

File encoding

Binary and ASCII STL files describe the same kind of triangular surface using different encodings. Binary files are usually smaller, while ASCII files store readable text and are often larger. Both still use the `.stl` extension, so the encoding may not be obvious from the filename alone.
